The storm that has battered the region strengthened Wednesday afternoon, prompting officials to issue a brief tornado warning for the central and eastern parts of San Diego County and forcing San Diego Unified schools to shelter in place.

The tornado warning took effect at about 2:55 p.m. and was to last until 3:45 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

However, the NWS canceled the warning shortly after 3:25 p.m.

A San Diego Unified School District spokesperson told 10News all schools were ordered to shelter in place when the warning was first issued, but after the warning, normal activity resumed.
