(KGTV) - Thirteen wins and 23 losses, a .361 winning percentage. No matter how you write it down, the numbers don't look good for the Padres.
We probably should have seen it coming. After all, Andy Green cautioned back in Spring Training that the Padres would be facing one of the toughest scheduled he's ever seen coming out of the gate in 2018. In retrospect, he may have undersold it a bit.
"Every team we've played this point with the exception of the Los Angeles Dodgers has a winning record," Green mentioned before his team's series against the Washington Nationals.
Fact-checking is easy. The list of Padres opponents? That's been hard.
Arizona Diamondbacks 23-11
Houston Astros 21-15
Colorado Rockies 20-15
Milwaukee Brewers 20-15
San Francisco Giants 19-16
New York Mets 18-15
Washington Nationals 19-17
Los Angeles Dodgers 15-19
Playoff contenders one and all. Even the Dodgers. Still, there's no chance you'll hear Green use the "E" word.
"We haven't been running through the bottom-feeders of the National League, but that's no excuse. If you want to be in the postseason you've got to beat those clubs and beat them consistently."
Words of truth...but the schedule has to give the Padres a break sometime, right? Well, not anytime soon.
The next four opponents:
St. Louis Cardinals 20-13
Colorado Rockies 20-15
Pittsburgh Pirates 19-16
Washington Nationals 19-17
Then, the Padres finally get a break in late May...against the Dodgers.
No one said putting together a winning team would be easy.
