SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Tiger Woods will play at this year’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course, officials said Wednesday.
Woods is playing the event one year after making his 2018 season debut at Torrey Pines. At that time, he had not played in a PGA Tour event since the previous year’s Farmers Insurance Open due to injuries.
While Woods finished the 2018 tournament tied for 23rd, the golf star used his finish to build momentum throughout the rest of the season, scoring seven top-10 finishes and capping his comeback year by winning the TOUR Championship -- his first tournament victory in more than five years.
Century Club of San Diego CEO Peter Ripa said, “We couldn’t be happier to have Tiger back in our field. He really launched his fairytale comeback season right here last January, and he has enjoyed incredible success at Torrey Pines Golf Course and in our tournament over the years. It will be exciting to see him alongside many of the game’s other top players January 24-27.”
The 43-year-old Woods, who has won the event seven times, joins an already impressive array of PGA Tour talent at the 2019 event. Fellow competitors include Rory McIlroy, world No. 1 Justin Rose, 2018 Farmers winner Jason Day, 2017 Farmers winner Jon Rahm, Jordan Speith, and Xander Schauffele, a San Diego native and the world’s sixth-ranked player.
Schauffele is a graduate of Scripps Ranch High School and San Diego State alum. Other participants with local ties include Torrey Pines High graduates Pat Perez and Jamie Lovemark, Poway native Charley Hoffman and SDSU alum J.J. Spaun.
