LA MESA, Calif (KGTV) - A new gymnasium at the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County bears the name of basketball Hall of Famer and La Mesa native Bill Walton.
The BGCEC’s new 26,000-square-foot (7600 Junior High Dr. in La Mesa) officially opened Wednesday, and it includes the 10,000-square-foot Bill Walton Gymnasium.
The 6-foot-11 Walton appeared at Thursday’s ribbon-cutting and said it’s the first time a gym has ever been named after him.
A tearful Walton spoke about his love for his family and San Diego, specifically La Mesa.
“My life has always been about the dream of being part of something special. Nothing has been more special than to see this dream come true. My dreams have come true because of all of you,” he told the audience.
