SAN DIEGO, Calif, (KGTV) -In order to stay competitive on the football field, the La Jolla Vikings have gone with some old-school recruiting techniques. They are not traveling around the city looking for a great young athlete, instead Head Coach Tyler Roach looks for talent on campus.

"it's high school we're a public school and I do my best recruiting her on campus walking the hallways, coming by at lunch time or before school."

In fact, the Vikings have found a handful of players on the basketball team. As basketball players have brought athleticism and toughness to the team. In a time when many athletes are focusing on just one sport, coach Roach relies on the multi-sport athlete to keep the team afloat.

"Our program really wouldn't exist if we didn't have guys playing multiple sports and that is the same across all of our athletics."

Coach Roach says you never know when you'll find a diamond in the rough.
