Woman hit, killed by suspected drunk driver in Escondido

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested for driving under the influence after police say he hit and killed a woman crossing the street in Escondido early Sunday morning.

The crash happened on the 1000 block of East Washington Avenue at 12:16 a.m. Sunday.

Police say the woman was crossing the street with her male companion when the driver of a 1999 Ford Ranger swerved to avoid hitting the man and instead struck the 32-year-old woman.

The woman was rushed into surgery for two broken femurs as well as and head injuries but later died due to the injuries.

The driver, later identified as 32-year-old Joel Francisco Juan was found to be driving under the influence.

Juan was booked into a detention center for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
