Vandal fails to chop down tree in Coronado

Posted

CORONADO, CALIF. (KGTV) - The Coronado Police Department needs the public’s help in identifying the ax-wielding individual that tried to chop down a city tree over the weekend.

Detectives say a vandal attempted to cut down a tree on Isabella St. at approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Police say it is felony vandalism and whoever axed it is facing a $10,000 fine.

“This looks so premeditated,” said arborist Shannon Player, “ because they ringed it.”

Shannon Player founded the Coronado Street Tree committee in 1992 and says the Chinese Lantern trees like the one chopped were planted because of the shade they provide along with the fact that they don’t get too big.

The chopped tree is in a public easement and trees cannot be modified or removed without approval from the city.

Detectives are looking for any witnesses or video evidence of the incident. Anyone with any information is urged to call our non-emergency line (619) 522-7350 or our investigations unit at (619) 522-7364.
