SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University and UC San Diego canceled study abroad programs in South Korea after the U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory over the spreading coronavirus.
SDSU’s cancellation will affect 12 students enrolled in the program's spring semester. Eight of those students had already left the U.S.
"This is developing, as you know, and we continue to work with our students who are already abroad or who have plans for international study," said SDSU Associate Director of Media Relations Cory Marshall.
Meanwhile, five UC San Diego students had been enrolled in the now-canceled spring South Korea program, according to Christine Clark, the school’s public information officer.

All of UC San Diego’s spring study abroad programs in China were previously canceled because of the coronavirus, affecting 11 students, Clark said.
Clark said all of the students had not yet departed and she was not aware of any UC San Diego student currently abroad in either country.
She said the decision to cancel the program was made at the UC level.
"It is required when the State Department issues a Level 3 Travel Advisory," she said.
News of that advisory came out Thursday.
UC San Diego is still reaching out to affected students and working on next steps, according to Clark.
