NEW YORK (AP) - Target plans to hire more than 120,000 people for the busy holiday shopping season, a 20 percent increase from last year.
The retailer says the temporary hires will stock store shelves and check people out at the register. In addition, it plans to hire 7,500 people to pack online orders at its warehouses. Target says it will pay workers $12 an hour, a dollar more an hour than last year.
Target stores in San Diego County are planning to hire about 1,200 team members. Across California, 28,000 workers are expected to be hired for the holiday season.
Perks and benefits for seasonal employees include:
-- 10 percent discount at Target stores and Target.com
-- additional 20 percent merchandise wellness discount on fruits and vegetables and all Simply Balanced and C9 Champion merchandise
-- opportunity to earn holiday pay on Thanksgiving and Christmas
-- flexible schedules that allow team members to work a variety of hours
Target says stores nationwide will host hiring events from Oct. 12-14 (10 a.m.-6 p.m. local time) to fill the seasonal positions. Anyone interested can apply in advance of the hiring events at TargetSeasonalJobs.com.
With a strong job market, retailers will likely face a harder time attracting workers for the holidays since workers can be pickier about where they work. Target says it will hold hiring events at stores next month.
Minneapolis-based Target Corp. has more than 1,800 stores around the country.
