WASHINGTON, D.C. (KGTV) - President Donald Trump said during an immigration speech Friday that San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer warned immigrants about an ICE operation, apparently confusing Faulconer with the female mayor of Oakland.
The president spoke to ‘Angel Families’ who have lost family members to crimes committed by people in the country illegally.
“Where is the condemnation of the Democrats’ sanctuary cities that release violent criminals into our communities and then protect them like the mayor of San Diego when she warned everybody that ICE is coming and they scattered,” said Trump.
In February, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf issued a warning about ICE operations in the San Francisco Bay area.
"I am sharing this information publicly not to panic our residents but to protect them," she said at the time. "My priority is for the well-being and safety of all residents -- particularly our most vulnerable."
Faulconer, who is a Republican, attended an Immigrant Heritage Month event in Balboa Park Friday morning before Trump spoke at the immigration event.
10News reached out to Faulconer’s office, which declined to comment in light of the apparent mistake in identity. Schaaf’s office had no immediate response. 10News is also waiting for comment from the White House.
