SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man surrendered to SWAT officers Sunday after an eight-hour standoff in San Diego's Birdland neighborhood.

Several blocks were closed off and residents were told to shelter in place as police created a perimeter. Finch Lane was closed from Redbird Drive to Teebird Lane. The home being surrounded was on Seagull Court.

The owner of the home told 10News he rents out the home and the standoff was with one of his tenants. He said the police were called earlier in the morning on Sunday when his tenant was experiencing mental health related issues. Police left, but were called back later in the day.

Witnesses heard a gunshot at the home Sunday afternoon. The owner said the tenant had barricaded himself in and was refusing to come out.

Sunday night, authorities could be heard on loudspeakers trying to negotiate with the man inside the home. The police helicopter was also overhead but was later grounded.

The unidentified man left the home about midnight and surrendered to police. He was taken to a mental health facility for an evaluation.
