ALLIED GARDENS, Calif. (KGTV) - A small dog was mauled on Sunday while playing fetch in the Allied Gardens Community Center park.

The owners of the dog, a malti-poo named “Sarge,” say they were out of town when it happened. Sarge was being watched by a family member.

They say he was running after a ball when a man with two Akitas on leashes walked by. One of the Akitas lunged for Sarge and grabbed him by the neck.

The family member rushed him to the emergency room at the VCA animal hospital in Kearny Mesa.

Veterinarians tell 10News he suffered punctures to his lungs and went into septic shock after surgery. However, he is now stable and will likely survive.

The Humane Society said they are investigating the incident. This was the first incident involving the Akitas that they had documented.

However, the Humane Society has only had jurisdiction over the area for a few months.

It was previously covered by County Animal Services, which told 10News the Akita had mauled another dog in 2015.

Sarge's owners have set up a GoFundMe to help pay for the mounting medical costs.
