EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A large sinkhole that formed on an El Cajon street swallowed up a car Monday night, but the driver was rescued and not injured.

Authorities said police and Helix Water District crews responded to a water main break reported shortly after 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Johnson Avenue and Vernon Way.

Crews worked to fix the break and closed off the intersection, but authorities said a driver -- who may not have realized the roadway was closed -- went around an emergency vehicle and entered the intersection.

As the car drove past the blockade and over weakened asphalt, the sinkhole opened, causing the vehicle to fall in.

Police officers at the scene got the driver out of the car as it slowly sank into the sinkhole.

10News learned water service was shut down for at least five nearby businesses.

Crews reopened the intersection about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
