San Diegans celebrate Thanksgiving early at Father Joe's

Hundreds of San Diegans in need gobbled up early turkey dinners Wednesday night at Father Joe's Village downtown.
Almost one hundred volunteers were on hand to serve up turkey and all the fixins' to hungry residents.

"San diego county has 8,700 individuals who are homeless...5,000 of whom are  unsheltered," said Deacon Jim Vargas, president and ceo of Joe's Vilalge. "So those who are able to be here with us are the lucky ones and they very much appreciate us."

Hundreds of pies, 600 pounds of potatoes and almost 200 turkeys were donated for the Wednesday night Thanksgiving feast.

On Thanksgiving day, the celebrations will continue as thousand of San Diegans hit the pavement for the Father Joe's Thanksgiving Day 5k before eating their turkey dinners. The race starts at 7:30 a.m.

There are several races planned throughout the county, so be aware of street closures. The Oceanside Turkey Trot kicks off at 6 a.m. and the San Diego Run for the Hungry starts at 7 a.m. downtown.
