CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Chula Vista residents have approved a half cent sales tax increase that will go into effect in 2019.

According to the city, the new sales tax will take effect in January of 2019. The passage of the tax ties Chula Vista for the highest sales tax in the county.

City officials say the money will be used for public safety.

People who support the tax point out the need for more police officers and better public safety.

Those in opposition pointed out that the language of the tax makes it so the money can be used for anything and that it has no end date.
