Chula Vista police investigates sexual assault of woman at Otay Park

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Police are searching for whoever sexually assaulted a woman at a South Bay park just steps from an elementary school -- an attack that sent the victim to the hospital.

Chula Vista police said a woman in her 20s was walking at about 8 p.m. Monday in Otay Park at 1613 Albany Avenue when she was attacked on a staircase on the park's east side by an unknown suspect.

During the attack, police said the woman suffered facial trauma and lost consciousness. After she regained consciousness, the woman discovered that she had been sexually assaulted and her property was stolen. The woman went to a nearby home to call for help.

Police told 10News the woman remains hospitalized with injuries of unknown severity.

Police said investigators are looking into the possibility the woman was assaulted by more than one person.

The park, located off Main Street, is just feet from Otay Elementary School.

Police said other people were likely in the park or nearby at the time of the attack and are asking anyone with information to call CVPD's Family Protection Unit at 619-409-5830 or 619-422-8477.

Police are also reminding the public to be aware of their surroundings, to use the buddy system while in public and to report suspicious activity.
