Man attacked downtown near Petco Park

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are investigating an attack near Petco Park on Sunday that left a man with life-threatening injuries.

At about 2:10 p.m., San Diego police responded to a report of an assault near the pedestrian bridge adjacent to Petco Park, off Trevor Hoffman Way.

When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive man near the bridge. Police said life-saving efforts were initiated and the man was transported to a hospital.

10News learned the man was not expected to survive from his injuries.

According to witnesses, the victim had been involved in an argument with a group of juveniles and they knocked him to the ground. Several juveniles from the group attacked the man when he was on the ground, police report. Witnesses reportedly yelled at the group and they ran away eastbound on Imperial Avenue.

Several people were detained in the area, but investigators are still determining if they were involved. The suspected attackers were described as a group of black male and female juveniles, according to police.
