How to keep your pets safe during the Fourth of July

Fireworks are a special treat every Fourth of July, but for your favorite four-legged friend, they can be sheer terror.

"People love fireworks. It's a fun day on the Fourth of July. Unfortunately, dogs are petrified of fireworks," said Daniel DeSousa of San Diego Department of Animal Services.

It's expected to be a very busy holiday for San Diego's Department of Animal Services. Extra officers will be out on the streets as soon as the show begins.

Experts say to keep your pets at home, in a secure and safe space. If need be, turn on the television to help drown out the sound from the fireworks.

If your pet does run away, check San Diego's Department of Animal Services website right away.

Shelters will be back open July 5 at 9 a.m.
