A knife-wielding man forced a woman into a car overnight and sexually assaulted her, police said.
The crime was reported about 3:30 a.m. at Shawline Street and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard in Kearny Mesa, police said.
"The suspect threatened the victim with a 7-inch knife and forced her to get into a car," sex crime detectives said. "She was then sexually assaulted."
According to investigators, the suspect may be a repeat offender who possibly was jailed recently for a similar crime, a San Diego television station reported.
The suspect, who was not identified or described, was driving a maroon pickup truck.
Police said the unidentified victim was safe and had been interviewed following the incident.
An investigation by the Sex Crimes unit was continuing.
