(KGTV) - San Diego is in desperate need of more housing - and hundreds of new homes and apartments are going up right now in Otay Ranch.

But a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday could make a South Bay project even more impactful.

The Milennia master plan community will transform largely open space into about 3,000 homes
over the next five years. There are already apartments and a public park, and now crews are going to add a shopping mall called Milennia Commons, and the Ayres boutique hotel.

“I’m just astounded by how fast they’re getting everything going,” said Vanessa Brook, who lives with her husband in one of the community’s complexes, across the street from the Otay Ranch Town Center mall.

The Milennia Commons mall will have tenants such as Ross, Cost Plus World Market, and Home Goods. It’ll also have eateries and places to congregate. The mall and the hotel should be complete by late 2018. Milennia will also eventually include offices, a school and a fire station.

“Everything we’re doing here is really an amenity for the city and the South County,” said Todd Galarneau, of Meridian Development, which is overseeing the master plan.

Milennia includes complexes from Shea Homes, Trammel Crow Residential, Fairfield Residential, among others.
