High surf and waves damaged railings and electrical wiring on the Ocean Beach Pier, and it remained closed Sunday.
Lifeguards hope a city repair crew can get to the landmark pier Sunday to fix the damage caused by 8-foot waves, Lt. Andy Lerum said.
Pounding surf caused the pier to be closed on Saturday, and "conditions are very similar today," Lerum said, adding a lot of people are visiting local beaches Sunday.
Lifeguards have been kept busy this weekend so far with a dozen rescues, including one Friday at La Jolla Cove involving a woman who swam too close to an area called The Hole, a reef which can be very dangerous when waves are rough, Lerum said.
"It took three lifeguards to pull her out of a very bad (situation)," Lerum said.
The National Weather Service posted a high surf advisory through 3 p.m. Sunday.
