Jose, Katia are now hurricanes

As Hurricane Irma churns through the Atlantic Ocean, Jose and Katia have gone from tropical storms to hurricanes. Both storms attained hurricane status at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday. 

Jose, which is in the open Atlantic, has top sustained winds of 85 MPH as of 11 p.m. Wednesday. It is projected to follow a similar path of Irma over the next few days, before turning to the north. 

Katia is in the western Gulf of Mexico, and will drift toward the Mexico coast this weekend. It had top sustained winds of 80 MPH as of 11 p.m.

At the 11 p.m. ET update, Irma remained a Category 5 at top winds of 185 MPH.
