House Speaker Ryan survives primary challenge

Following a roller coaster week which included an endorsement from controversial GOP standard-bearer Donald Trump, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan easily won a Republican primary in his Wisconsin district.

Ryan was defeating businessman Paul Nehlen by an 85-15 margin as of late Tuesday evening.

Ryan will face Democrat Ryan Solen in November.

The controversy between Trump and Ryan appeared to have little impact on the primary. Trump waited until last Friday to offer his support of the speaker.

Trump's endorsement was an about face from earlier last week when Trump said he was not ready to endorse Ryan.

Ryan offered his endorsement of Trump in early June. Since Ryan endorsed Trump, he has denounced Trump for a number of comments the GOP nominee has made.

The speaker has had no problem winning Wisconsin's first district. He has won the distinct by double-digit margins every two years since 1998.
