American Airlines will begin offering free meals on flights — but there's a catch

American Airlines announced Tuesday that it will offer free meals to all passengers on select flights starting May 1.

The airline will offer meals on all direct flights between New York and San Francisco as well as flights from New York to Los Angeles.

The meals will include a sandwich wrap, chips and a dessert and will also include breakfast items during certain hours. American will also offer a vegetarian meal or a fruit-and-cheese plate.

American’s announcement comes just weeks after Delta began offering free meals on select flights. By April, Delta will offer free meals on 12 flight routes to destinations across the country.

With Tuesday’s announcement, United Airlines is now currently the largest airline that does not offer free meals.
