SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Hundreds of mourners attended a memorial service this afternoon in Pacific Beach to remember the local musician killed by a fallen tree last weekend.

The event at Kate Sessions Park was in honor of Nicki Carano, 48, of San Diego. She was crushed to death when a 8-foot-diameter oak tree fell on the car she was driving on southbound Ingraham Street in Pacific Beach shortly
after 3:00 p.m. on Jan. 31.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner said she died of obvious trauma.

Carano was a music teacher at the Nightingale Music School in La Jolla. Her Facebook page said she was from Tucson and attended Clairemont High School in San Diego. The school invited Carano's friends and family to join them at the celebration and share their memories and love.

The sunny, warm weather at the two-hour event was much different than last weekend, when the winter storm and strong winds caused the tree to topple onto four cars, including Carano's.

A dance scholarship has been established in her name at Mesa Community College, where she attended and taught.
