Money being raised to paint Hillcrest crosswalks in rainbow colors

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some crosswalks in San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood could soon be brightened up a bit.

The Hillcrest Business Association is accepting donations to help paint the crosswalks at Fifth and Robinson avenues in rainbow colors.

The initiative began through community outreach, and donation jars were set up during this past weekend’s CityFest event.

“That’s a historic intersection in Hillcrest. Brass Rail is there, the oldest gay bar in the city, so really that’s a meeting place and always has been in Hillcrest; it used to be the heart of Hillcrest … so we’re really excited for that location,” said Benjamin Nicholls, executive director of the Hillcrest Business Association.

The association needs $10,000 to do the initial work and would also need a fund for upkeep.
