SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police identified Tuesday evening the man whose body washed ashore near Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach early in the morning.

Two people who work at a nearby business were walking on the beach shortly before 3 a.m. when they discovered a body on the sand.

The pair have medical training tried life-saving measures while emergency crews responded. However, the man was later declared dead at the scene.

Police and lifeguard officials said the man’s clothes and wallet were found nearby. He was identified as 26-year-old James Alfred Wolpert of Poway.

An official with the Medical Examiner’s Office believes Wolpert drowned, but the incident remains under investigation.

As more visitors hit local beaches this summer, police and lifeguards are warning beachgoers to use a buddy system when getting in the water.
