SAN DIEGO - A man was in custody Monday for allegedly beating his female roommate at a Clairemont home over the weekend, fatally injuring her.

David Charles Ashton, 62, was arrested in the 3900 block of Mount Everest Boulevard, in the same neighborhood where the deadly assault occurred, according to San Diego police. He was booked on suspicion of murder.

About 3:30 a.m. Sunday, someone made a 911 call from an apartment on Missouri Street in Pacific Beach to report that a 48-year-old woman had passed out and stopped breathing, Sgt. Brent Williams said.

Medics took Regina Moore to a hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition with severe trauma to her head and left arm. She died shortly before noon, and detectives took Ashton into custody later in the day.

Ashton was being held at San Diego Central Jail without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Police did not confirm whether they had a motive for the crime. Authorities also did not release how the victim got from Clairemont Mesa to Pacific Beach following the attack.
