SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego takes one of the top spots in the U.S. for cities where 40-year-olds owe the most money on student loans, according to a new report.

The report, released by studentloanhero.com shows how much debt 40-year-old residents in the 25 largest metropolitan areas still owe on college loans.

According to the report, San Diego takes the 25th spot.

The average balance of 40-year-old San Diegans is $43,483 with an average monthly payment of $174.

“Overall, it seems that 40-year-old borrowers in major cities have more debt than their rural or suburban counterparts,” the report says.

The site also offers some tips on repayment, such as paying more than the minimum monthly payment and refinancing.
