SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Major repair work is continuing Tuesday on a busy Pacific Beach-area street after a water main break damaged the road and caused the formation of a large sinkhole the day before.
A 30-inch pipe broke just before 1 p.m. Monday on the northbound side of Mission Bay Drive, near Damon Avenue, and the break prompted crews to turn off water to the area.
Water officials said turning off the water caused low water pressure in several areas of the city.
Meanwhile, the main break caused a sinkhole of at least 8 feet wide to form, prompting the closure of all northbound lanes on Mission Bay Drive.
As of Tuesday morning, only one southbound lane on Mission Bay Drive is open. The onramp to northbound Interstate 5 is open, but drivers will be directed to take a detour before entering the freeway.
Repair work is expected to continue through the day, 10News learned.
