SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Escondido teacher who was there when a teenager was attacked by a shark in Encinitas says he also stepped in to help save the boy.
Alan Ryan, a teacher at Epiphany Prep Charter School, says he was at Beacon’s Beach Saturday for the opening day of lobster diving.
When he arrived, Ryan says he saw divers waving their flashlights and heard them yell that that there had been a shark attack.
Ryan says he grabbed a tourniquet from his truck and headed down to the beach. Rescuers were able to apply pressure to Keane Hayes’ injuries.
Ryan says he comforted the teen until paramedics arrived. “I was holding his head and telling him things were okay… trying to keep him calm and talking to him.”
Ryan says he has three boys of his own, his youngest is almost the same age as Hayes. He says the family visit Beacon’s Beach often and it was a shock to hear of the attack.
“It was pretty emotional for all of us.” Ryan says he wishes Hayes a speedy recovery. He hopes to see him back in the water soon.
