SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The University of California has released an artist rendering of a new 21 story dorm building proposed for the campus.

The dorm, which is currently in the design phase, would be located south of Revelle College.

According to the university, the need for more campus housing was identified during a planning process in 2012.

"Since then, the number of undergraduate applications to UC San Diego nearly doubled, spurring a 34 percent spike in undergraduate enrollment and a 41 percent spike in graduate enrollment," the school said.

The project would provide housing for 2,000 students.

The project would also include retail, dining, parking, classrooms, academic support space, and open space and outdoor gathering areas.
