CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - In a cost-saving move, the Sweetwater Union High School District says numerous bus routes to district high schools are being cut starting next school year.
Four of the district’s 13 high schools affected by the route cuts are:
-- Eastlake High: 2 routes cut
-- Olympian High: 4 routes cut
-- Otay Ranch High: 1 route cut
-- San Ysidro High: at least 20 routes cut
District spokesman Manuel Rubio said the bus route cuts will not impact middle schools. Additionally, bus service for special education students or for extra-curricular/after-school activities will not be affected.

10News learned the district will save about $500,000 each school year by cutting the routes. The district has been working all school year to cut costs and balance its budget amid a myriad of financial issues.
In a letter sent to parents on May 17, the district said the route changes were made “due to several factors including: 1) the completion of Otay Mesa Road leading to San Ysidro High; 2) Bringing all high schools into alignment Administrative Regulation 3541 (approved in 2012) with the minimum distance -- 3.5 miles -- required for transportation services; and 3) these reductions assist in our budget planning for the 2019-20 school year.
Bus stops that will continue in the 2019-20 school year are identified as, ‘Remain’ in the listing below. Bus stops that fall outside of the 3.5 mile regulation and will not continue in 2019-20 school year are identified as ‘Reduced.’"
