SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A stretch of Interstate 8 in the East County was closed in both directions early Tuesday morning because of the road conditions caused by overnight rain and snow.

Caltrans San Diego warned travelers that all lanes on westbound I-8 at Imperial Highway and all lanes on eastbound I-8 at Willows Road were shut down “due to snow/icy conditions.”

ABC 10News was in Alpine Tuesday morning as California Highway Patrol officers warned the long line of drivers on Willows Road that it could be several hours before the roads can be safely reopened.

LATEST WEATHER FORECAST | CHECK TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

CHP officials at the scene told ABC 10News rain, snow, and hail fell between 10 p.m. Monday and 2 a.m. Tuesday. Temperatures continued to drop, which combined with the other factors, made for a treacherous stretch of road.

For those looking to venture to San Diego’s mountains on Tuesday to enjoy the snow, it could be a few hours before roads will reopen, but once open, chains will be required.

A checkpoint is also in place at South Grade Road and state Route 76.
