Two dead after multi-car crash closes I-5 lanes in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Two people were killed and two others were injured in a multi-car crash on southbound Interstate 5 in Chula Vista early Saturday.

The crash was reported just before 5 a.m. between the J Street and Bay Boulevard. exits on SB I-5. According to CHP, a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes collided with multiple vehicles. At least seven cars were involved in the crash.

At least two people had died in the collision, CHP told 10News. It wasn't clear which drivers involved had died. Two other people were taken to UCSD Medical Center, one with serious injuries.

One of those who passed was David Ramirez, 23. His family said he was on his way home from working an overnight shift as a manager at Five Guys in Hillcrest. They said he was an Army veteran and new father to baby Victoria who was born in October.

They set up a GoFundMe for his funeral expenses.

CHP didn't immediately release any further details about the deadly wreck.

All lanes of SB I-5 were closed between J St. and L St. four hours as debris was scattered across all lanes. Lanes were reopened just after 2 p.m. once crews cleared the scene.
