SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Children at Imperial Beach Charter West school received new books on National Reading Day, thanks to ABC 10News and the Scripps Howard Foundation.

The nationwide literacy event is celebrated every Jan. 23 as part of the “If you give a child a book…” campaign and encourages Pre-K through third grade students to become lifelong learners.

Clifford the Big Red Dog visited the South Bay campus, along with Jason Martinez and Kalyna Astrinos from 10News.

10News employees donated $2,249 for the purchase of books, with a matching donation by the Scripps Howard Foundation.

A total of 1,780 books were purchased from Scholastic Book Fairs. Children chose up to two books and additional books were donated to the school library.

The San Diego County Office of Education and Scholastic Book Fairs of San Diego also contributed to Wednesday’s event.
