RANCHO BERNARDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Two people used a truck to rip an ATM out of the Phil’s BBQ restaurant in Rancho Bernardo Friday morning, but the thieves fled after only removing a portion of the machine.
At around 3:30 a.m., San Diego police were called to the restaurant at 17051 W. Bernardo Dr. in response to an attempted break-in.
Police told 10News they believe the two thieves threw large rocks through the restaurant’s glass front door, tied a rope or chain around the ATM and used a truck in an attempt to pull it out.
The top portion of the ATM was ripped out, but the portion of the machine with $200 in cash remained embedded in the restaurant floor.
The thieves apparently gave up and left the scene.
Kevin Sheehan, Chief Operation Officer for Phil's BBQ, has seen the surveillance video. He says it does show the truck was a U-Haul truck, but it doesn't provide a clear image of the thieves.
