1 dead, suspect arrested in shooting outside Mission Valley hotel

UPDATE (March 5): San Diego Police announced the arrest of a suspect in a shooting outside of a Mission Valley hotel that killed one man and injured another.

Police said 29-year-old Kevin Larin was arrested in connection with the incident that occurred late Monday night outside of the Handlery Hotel (950 Hotel Circle North).

According to police, Larin was involved in a confrontation with a 19-year-old Hispanic man and a 23-year-old Hispanic man in the hotel’s parking lot.

Police believe Larin opened fire, striking the 19-year-old in the upper torso and the 23-year-old man in his upper body, and then left the scene.

The 19-year-old victim, who was found in a hotel hallway, died at the scene. The other victim was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

SDPD officers located the suspected shooter in a pickup truck parked in the hotel’s parking lot. Officers ordered him out of the vehicle and then arrested him.

Larin was booked into County Jail on suspicion of murder.

No other details on the incident were released.


SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police are investigating a shooting in Mission Valley Monday evening that left at least one person dead.

San Diego Police officials said the shooting occurred just after 9 p.m. in the 900 block of Hotel Circle, near the Handlery Hotel. The shooting prompted a response from officers and a SWAT unit.

Details on how the incident unfolded were not immediately released, but police confirmed one person was shot in the arm and another was shot in the chest.

Less than an hour after the shooting, police said one of the victims died from their injuries; the condition of the other victim was unknown.

During the police response, ABC 10News cameras captured one person being led away in handcuffs, but police did not say if that person was tied to the shooting.

Just after 11 p.m., officers at the scene told ABC 10News that the incident was “over,” but they did not elaborate further.

Police are expected to provide additional information on Tuesday.
