SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of San Diego County children will be grabbing their helmets Wednesday, May 8, to take part in National Bike to School Day.
The event started in 2012 in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists National Bike Month.
Before sending the kids off to school, parents should determine safe routes and stress the importance of safety, experts say. The National Center for Safe Routes to School has a list you can check for your neighborhood.

Parents should also make sure children have proper equipment, such as helmets and clothing that’s easily visible to drivers.
You can also prepare your child to be safe on the road with games created by the U.S. Department of Transportation designed to test their traffic knowledge.
