SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police detained a person suspected of dropping off a suspicious package at San Diego’s City Hall building, prompting an evacuation and bomb squad response.

Shortly after 8 a.m. Monday, San Diego police received reports of a person who dropped off a Christmas gift-wrapped box at the downtown building on C Street and then left the scene.

The person who dropped off the package was detained a short time later while a bomb squad was called in to inspect the box.

Access to the building blocked and those inside were evacuated as authorities examined the package.

By 9:40 a.m., the package was determined to be harmless and evacuees were allowed to return to the building. The box contained items that were not considered dangerous.

There is no immediate word on if the person detained was arrested.
