OCEAN BEACH (CNS) - A 20-foot section of the south wooden railing midway on the Ocean Beach Pier was damaged by pounding surf, keeping the pier closed for the third day until repairs can be made, San Diego lifeguards said today.

The pier was closed to the public on Friday as a safety precaution, Lt. Andy Lerum of the San Diego Lifeguard Service said.

Lifeguards examined the pier on Saturday and discovered the damaged section of the railing.

The lifeguard service sent out a Twitter message to the public Sunday that read:

"The Ocean Beach Pier remains closed due to minor damage to the south railing. City carpenters will be repairing the railing as soon as possible. Large surf caused the damage yesterday. We'll send out an update when the OB Pier is re-opened.''

Lifeguards on duty along the coast were involved in a handful of routine water rescues on Saturday because of the high surf, Lerum said.
