OCEAN BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - The Ocean Beach Pier closed after a High Surf Advisory was issued by the National Weather Service.

The pier shut down at least twice in 2020.

The National Weather Service reported waves would reach 5-8 feet in San Diego County over the weekend.

Visitors and locals were sad to see the gates closed.

"I just wanted to fish for a little bit and I pulled up and was like what's going on here?" Derek Tidwell said when he stopped by on his way home to Temecula.

Neila Hingorani lives in OB and said she was meeting her friends from Boston at the pier Saturday. "We were looking forward to taking them for a walk down the pier because that what we do for the sunset and we were really sad because it's closed."

"It's really tough when we close the pier, I understand why, but I mean it's just a little water splashing, I'm okay with that," she said wishing they could walk down the pier.

Tidwell agreed with officials who made the call, "I think it's good, yeah, it's like riding a motorcycle without a helmet, it's common sense."

The pier was closed from January through Mayfor repairs after high surf ripped apart the railing.
