OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A high-speed pursuit topping speeds of 100 miles per hour ended in a violent crash in Oceanside early Wednesday morning.
According to the San Diego County Sheriffs Department, the pursuit began around 12:15 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5.
Deputies said they tried to pull the driver over, but the driver sped away. According to deputies, they chased the car until it was too dangerous to continue.
A few minutes after deputies let the car go, a crash was reported near the eastbound state Route 78 ramp.
Deputies said the driver apparently lost control of the car, veered off the freeway, and then slammed into a tree.
When deputies arrived, they found the male driver trapped inside, but the passenger had run away.
It took fire crews about 20 minutes to rescue the driver from the car, and he was taken by medical helicopter to Scripps La Jolla Hospital.
His current condition is unclear.
The passenger has not been located.
