ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The National Guard is set up and ready to help ease the burden at local hospitals. The state's federal medical station was activated last week and is set up at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.
National Guard troops started their mission on Monday, Dec. 28, and will be set up as long as it is necessary.
The medical station is on the 10th and 11th floors of the medical center. The station can serve up to 200, less severe patients that do not require ICU care.
The team of six is led by either a physician or a nurse and it is made up of various medical specialists, equivalent to that of a physician's or nurse's assistant.
A spokesperson for Palomar Medical Center referred all questions to state officials, but did tell ABC 10News the site is not being used yet.
This is not the first time the National Guard has been called on to help during this pandemic. In October and November about 40 service-members were sent to help at two local nursing homes in Santee and El Cajon.
