SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man believed to be armed with a long gun was spotted at a school in the University City area Wednesday morning, prompting a police response.

The incident occurred at Standley Middle School (6298 Radcliffe Dr.) at around 11 a.m., according to San Diego police.

Police said a witness reported seeing a man walking on a field near the campus carrying what appeared to be a long rifle.

SDPD and San Diego Unified School District police officers arrived at the school and conducted a search of the campus. During the search, officers saw a red car leaving the area and stopped the vehicle.

The driver was questioned, and officers found what is believed to be a firearm in the trunk. Police did not immediately confirm what the weapon was or if it was real.

There is no word on if the man was arrested.

There were no teachers or students on campus at the time of the incident, but a school food distribution effort was delayed during the school search.
