SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System is offering free rides on trolley and buses on New Year’s Eve.

As people figure out their New Year’s Eve plans, MTS is making it easier to plan out how to get to and from destinations safely.

MTS will offer free rides on the trolley and buses after 6 p.m. on Dec. 31. Additionally, trolley hours will extend past 2 a.m., as will some of the bus routes.

MTS Manager of Public Relations Mark Olson said, “You don’t need a Compass Card. You don’t need a phone or an ID. You just board the trolley, your bus, and get to where you need to go safely.”

The North County Transit District is also doing the same thing, providing free rides after 6 p.m.

“It’s going to be free on the Coaster, which goes from downtown San Diego to Oceanside. And then the Sprinter as well. The light rail line from Escondido to Oceanside,” said Olson.

MTS has also partnered with rideshare company Lyft -- if you catch a ride to or from an MTS Transit Center, use discount code MTSNYE19 to get 20% off each ride.
