ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Loved ones of a 14-year-old skateboarder critically injured in a hit-and-run crash in Escondido are appealing for tips.

More than a week later, the chalk outline of a skateboard remains on North Fig Street near Grand Avenue.

Authorities believe the 14-year-old, identified by family members as Angel Ornelas, was riding in the street about two Thursdays ago around 9:30 p.m. Police report that a car collided with Ornelas, who was found unconscious in the road and rushed to the hospital. Witnesses reported hearing a car speed away to the south. As of eight days later, Ornelas remains in critical condition.

“It’s heartbreaking for us to hear it,” said Lupe Anguiano, a neighbor and school employee who has expressed concerns about local traffic safety. “It’s just so wrong.”

Anguiano has long worried about the risks of speeding in the area. “Even though the speed limit is 35 miles per hour, some drive up to 50. At night, you hear races throughout the streets,” she said.

The crash site is near a busy intersection featuring a school crossing and a yield sign, but no stop sign.

Anguiano is advocating for increased safety measures, including a stop sign, speed bumps, and an additional sidewalk on the side of the street where the accident occurred.

“You see there is a sidewalk on the other side of the street but not on the side where the accident took place,” Anguiano said.

As neighbors voice their concerns, Angel's family continues to keep vigil at the hospital. A spokesperson for the family tells ABC 10News they are hoping someone will come forward with information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Escondido Police Department at 760-839-4423 and ask for Officer Paul Smyth.

Angel’s family is also seeking prayers and has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help with medical and other expenses.
