LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - Nearly 200 people attended a vigil Wednesday night, in memory of a Helix High School sophomore that was stabbed and killed at a party in Chula Vista.

Crowds started gathering at the large "H" at the back of the school around 5 p.m. The vigil started at sunset.

Fifteen-year-old Devin Griffiths was at a birthday party at the 900 block of Maria Way in Chula Vista on Jan 31. Police say an argument broke out between two teens, which escalated into a brawl. Griffiths tried to help his friend, who was being attacked by a group of young men. That's when he was stabbed. Griffiths died in the hospital on Feb 16.

"I have a lot of mixed emotions, but I'm just trying to stay strong because that's what he'd want me to do," his best friend told 10News.

Police have not arrested anyone in connection to the teen's death. They say the suspect group took off in two unknown vehicles. The suspect group consisted of 8 to 15 people, ages 17 to 20, mostly men.

"Please, our children know something, but they're afraid," said a family friend speaking to the public through reporters. "They will not tell unless they have the support. So please take the lead and call the police. Please come forward because this kid was taught to stick up for those who were down, and he lost his life for it."
