(KGTV) - A US Customs and Border Protection agent was killed in a helicopter crash near the US-Mexico border in East County Monday, the agency has confirmed.

On December 16, a CBP Air and Marine Operations aircraft on a border security mission was involved in an aviation mishap in the vicinity of Potrero, California. Tragically, a CBP Air Interdiction Agent - the pilot and sole occupant of the aircraft - was pronounced deceased at the scene. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

The crash happened north of SR-94 and south of Barrett Lake at around 10:15 a.m.

The pilot, who was killed in the crash, was the only person on board, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Video from the scene showed the downed helicopter, as well as an American flag lying on the ground and what is believed to be a body.

From what 10News has learned about the tail number, FlightAware shows that the helicopter departed from Brown Field Municipal Airport in Otay Mesa around 9 a.m.

CalFire confirmed that the aircraft is not one of their helicopters, and Customs and Border Patrol has taken the lead on the incident.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
