Police arrest man for attempted rape in La Mesa neighborhood

A 29-year-old man was shot multiple times and died in a La Mesa shopping center, police said Saturday.

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — Police arrested a man on Wednesday accused of trying to rape a woman in broad daylight in La Mesa.

La Mesa Police said officers received numerous calls about a man assaulting a woman in an undeveloped area in the 5600 block of Amarillo Avenue just after 2 p.m. Witnesses reported a woman partially clothed, bleeding from the face yelling for the suspect to stop.

Officers arrived to find that the suspect had fled the area on foot, but later located him after searching the area, police said.

The suspect, 43-year old Louis Ahwuli Gomez, was arrested for attempted rape and booked into San Diego County jail. Gomez is believed to be a transient, according to LMPD.

Police said the woman was treated at the scene for minor injuries to her face. She is also believed to be a local transient.
